The software was created in 1999, and since then, it has become a favorite amongst electronic music producers, DJs, and recording artists all over the world.Ībleton Live can be used for a variety of tasks, from recording and mixing to sound design and live performance. Conclusion Introduction Overview Of Ableton Live & FL Studio What Is Ableton Live?Ībleton Live is an intuitive and multifaceted DAW software known for its creative workflow and live performance capabilities. It's all preference in the end, but to me, Live has so much more to offer after you get over the somewhat larger learning curve (as opposed to FL). When using FL I always feel like I'm manipulating and working against FL, whereas with Live, I'm working with it. Everything is so much more linear and workable. In my opinion, as I go back and see what FL has after learning a lot with Ableton, it's still Ableton all the way. He chose to start with FL, and I've been assisting him a bit. So much more than FL.Īlso, a good friend of mine just recently got in to producing. Reason left me feeling half-retarded, and I fell in love with Ableton after a small learning curve, so I found that I love Ableton. So I downloaded Ableton's demo and Reason's demo. I was rollin' with FL for a couple years, but felt like I had to at least try other DAWs to see what I was missing. FL would be crying.ĭownload the demo and give it a shot. And I'm sure I'm forgetting like 20 other things, too (haven't used FL in a while).Īlso I can't seem to get Ableton to break a sweat - even at the densest parts of my songs it's barely using 10% CPU. Side chain compression is so easy you'll be doing it in every track, no joke. Ableton's handling of FL's mixer is a lot nicer. Ableton's 'instrument rack' is a lot more expressive than FL's 'layer'. Ableton's built in piano is like 100x better than FL Keys, don't even get me started. Rendering seems faster in Ableton (haven't benchmarked it). The way Ableton handles sustain pedal is seriously better than FL. You don't have to keep clicking that dumb dropdown to set different quantization rates, you can just scroll in and Ableton will update it. The library is snappier (cmd-f lists ALL results, not just one, and it's instantaneous, and it can also search for effects). It does automation soooo much better than FL, I can't even explain. That was very nice.īut Ableton is better, generally speaking. If you pushed, I'd admit I also miss how you could set other properties of note (other than velocity) in the bar under the step sequencer. I do miss some things from FL: pitch bend and pattern blocks. I used FL for 9 years, then switched to Ableton a few months ago. Here's something I wrote a while back about the differences: If you are looking for feedback on your own music please post it to /r/abletonfeedback/. However, please take notice of a few rules:ĭiscussion of cracked software will be removed. Questions about synthesis, getting a certain sound with Live, troubleshooting, general or specific production questions and the like are welcome. Please post anything related to Live compatible hardware and software, synths, VSTs, controllers, etc.
